Learning Challenge: Sleep? What's That?

Image
For this post, I used the following article: An Underappreciated Key to College Success: Sleep This article confirmed that many college students often struggle with getting enough sleep for the next day. Between studying and extracurricular activities, the time that we have to rejuvenate ourselves is limited. I remember back in high school, it was easy to get 8 hours of sleep each night. However, now that I'm a senior in engineering, I sometimes struggle to even get 6 or 7 hours of sleep. This article taught me how important sleep is to be successful in college. I had no idea that a lack of sleep was more detrimental than alcohol or drug use towards academic performance. I often found myself sleeping early the night before an exam to be well-rested for the morning. Obviously, I took that sleeping time for granted then, but now I know the true value of being well-rested and how that can greatly affect my overall academic performance. I'm curious to learn more about some tech...

Growth Mindset: Learning or Grades?

Image
For this post, I used the following article: The Emotional Weight of Being Graded, for Better or Worse This article confirmed to me that students can get emotional from their grades. They can get excited about getting an A+ or devastated by a D-. Like other students, I have also suffered from the same emotional stress from my grades. We feel so obligated to uphold our precious GPA that we sacrifice sleep in order to finish assignments or study for tests. However, this article has taught me that there is a distinctive difference between studying to learn and working for a grade. Like the article stated, a student could make full points on all class exams, proving that they know the material. However, that feat still would not guarantee an A as their grade per class regulations. I am curious to learn more about this distinction between genuine learning and working for a grade. I plan to investigate this in my coursework this semester and think about how studying affects my best inter...

Tech Tip: Canvas Notifications

I have previously configured my Canvas Notifications for other courses. I configured my Canvas settings to send me a notification for when grades were added for an assignment or files were added to a course profile. This was especially helpful for me to keep track of grades to fully know of my overall performance in the class. It also helped alert me to when new files or presentations were added for each of my courses so I can stay up to date on all the important course information. Overall, I configured my Canvas Notifications to alert me of grading, added course content, announcements, submission comments, invitations, conversations, appointments, and global announcements. Utilizing this configuration for Canvas notifications, I have found that I am able to receive sufficient updates on various courses without the notifications feeling overbearing. These notifications have helped me stay on top of all my courses and updated on any course changes or announcements. Paired together with...
