Growth Mindset: Learning or Grades?

For this post, I used the following article: The Emotional Weight of Being Graded, for Better or Worse

This article confirmed to me that students can get emotional from their grades. They can get excited about getting an A+ or devastated by a D-. Like other students, I have also suffered from the same emotional stress from my grades. We feel so obligated to uphold our precious GPA that we sacrifice sleep in order to finish assignments or study for tests.
However, this article has taught me that there is a distinctive difference between studying to learn and working for a grade. Like the article stated, a student could make full points on all class exams, proving that they know the material. However, that feat still would not guarantee an A as their grade per class regulations.
I am curious to learn more about this distinction between genuine learning and working for a grade. I plan to investigate this in my coursework this semester and think about how studying affects my best interest. Obviously, I want to catch up on my hours of sleep, but at what expense? I think there is a fine balance that needs to be found!

  1. Hi Jackie! I am so glad you are exploring these topics at the start of the semester like this; I hope that can help out with your classes overall for the whole semester! If you are interested in this whole grading question, I wrote a chapter for a book that is coming out this year on "ungrading," with information about how/why I stopped putting grades on people's work in these classes. If you want to take a look at that for a growth mindset thing to do and share your thoughts, you can find it online here: Grading.MythFolklore.net. I am really excited about getting to share what I've learned about this with professors at other schools and K-12 teachers also. The book has contributions from both college and K-12 instructors, which is also very cool I think. :-)
