Week 2: Topic Brainstorm For Semester Project

Stories from Vietnam:

I'm very interested in learning more about Stories from Vietnam because my family is Vietnamese. I want to learn more about the stories from my culture, and this topic will provide a great opportunity. I currently have no previous knowledge about Vietnamese mythology and folklore, but I would like to learn more about the stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. I'm curious to learn more about the stories of the Vietnamese dragon, Thánh Gióng, and Liễu Hạnh. At this point, I have a vision of retelling the story of the Vietnamese dragon from a first-person perspective, capturing the essence of the legend from a person who lived with these mythological creatures.

Moon Stories:

I'm interested in learning more about Moon Stories because I remember learning about them in elementary school. The most distinct moon story that I remember is the Man in the Moon. However, I'm also interested in learning more about the Moon rabbit, as it stems from Buddhist tales that have close ties with my Vietnamese culture. I think I'd like to retell the story of the Moon rabbit with a modern twist to it. Maybe I'll incorporate modern characters into the old story or develop since science fiction twists into the story with a giant laser...

Tigers:

I'm interested in learning more about Tiger stories because I was born in the year of the tiger according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. It may seem like a frivolous reason to be interested in a topic, but it works out in the end. I currently don't have much knowledge about tiger stories, but I'm keen to learn more about stories of the majestic beast. I'm most interested to learn more about Asian Tiger Cultures, since I think I'll be able to relate more to the culture and meaning behind the stories. I'm looking forward to retelling the story of The Tiger and The Man from the perspective of the Tiger, imploring his feelings and emotions behind the hunt.

Robin Hood:

I'm interested in learning more about the tales of Robin Hood because I remember reading about his folklore tales in back in middle school. I've also seen the recent Robin Hood film based on his encounters with the Sheriff of Nottingham. As such, I'm keen to learn about about the stories of Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. I'm curious to see how well the film was adapted to tell the old tale. I think I'd tell this story for the perspective of the Sheriff, to capture his emotions and feelings about the actions of Robin Hood.

Week 15 Story: The Huntsman

I spent my days wandering the woods, hunting for deer and boar. This was my livelihood, and with my rewards from my hunt, I provided for my lovely wife and young daughter. I dearly loved them both and did my best to care for them. One day, one of the king's messengers sent for me. I obliged to come forth, though I questioned why he would summon such a common huntsman as myself. I later learned that the queen had summoned me to do away with her step-child. She loathed the child greatly, for the child had grown to so beautiful that the queen's beauty paled in comparison. The queen bade me to lead her step-child, Snow-White, in the middle of the woods and take her heart out as a token of the treacherous deed. Microfiction: How a Hawk Gave a Feather to an Arrow

Story 1 || 25 words: An Indian saved a young hawk, whose feathers provided flight. The arrow adorned with the feather of the hawk flies straight and meets its mark. Story 2 || 100 words: A baby hawk fell from his nest, too young and helpless to fly. The hawk would surely would have been eaten if it were not for a young Indian boy who found him. The young boy raised the hawk until he could fly, yet the hawk stayed with him. The young boy made arrows that could not steer straight and faltered in the breeze. The clever hawk drew his own feather and adorned it to the arrow, which now flew as straight as the hawk. The villagers gave a great shout, as now their arrows flew straight through the air.
